Quick Jump FAQ's:

What is the history of the Cricket Club?

The Cricket Club at SDSU was officially recognized in 2006 but the sport was played in Brookings since 2001. Here's a little history about the club:

2001:: Students from India received funding from the International Relations Club on campus to purchase equipment to play Cricket. Founded by graduate students in 2001, the sport rapidly gained popularity. Students from next batches worked hard and brought the club up to the next level. Students named their group Brookings-11 Cricket Club and shared expenses among themselves to keep the club going.

2003-2004: A group of players invited teams from Marshall, MN and Sioux Falls, SD to play casual matches. Sensing from the dominant victories over other teams, the players decided to compete with teams in North Dakota and Minnesota. The self-funded Brookings-11 team participated in the Cricket-Lite Touranament in Fargo, ND - a annual tournament hosted by the Cricket Club at NDSU.

Guess what? The Brookings-11 team came back with the winners trophy!!

2005-2006: Students worked hard to prepare ByLaws and Constitution, working closely with the Greek Life office. This was in an attempt to gain official status on campus. The club received official club status in 2006, however, the Athletics department was generous enough to fund the so-called Brookings-11 team in 2005 for their participation in the tournament at NDSU. The team made it to the Semi-Finals. This was the first time SDSU was defeated in the tournament.

Does the Cricket Club play in winter?

Yes, but indoors (ROTC gym). Cricketing season starts soon after the snow melts and the days warms up, and the season continues through the end of Fall. Ideally, May through late September is the time when one could find a group of 20-30 friendly people playing Cricket either on the greens behind the Campanile or north of Garden Square (east of the old tennis courts). Feel absolutely free to stop by. The friendly crowd will be more than happy to explain how the game is played.

Can I join?

You are most welcome to join the Cricket Club. Currently, we have 40+ very friendly club members. Club membership fees are modest - students at SDSU pay $5 for the whole season/year. All others pay $10. We play on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the summer months through September end. We also play in the Intramural building (The Barn) on certain weekends over the winter.

How is the club funded?

The Club greatly appreciates the help and support of Dr. Peggy Miller (18th SDSU President), the Athletics Department and Greek Life in giving the club official status, and for their funding. We also appreciate the members for keeping the club active, the community for supporting the sport and all who have generously donated to the club.
