University Program Council began in 1975 under the name Student Union
Council (SUC). It was formed to oversee the work previously done by the
Union Program Board and the Union Board of Directors. SUC was at that
time advised by the Cultural Entertainment Director, rather than a
Program Advisor. SUC's programs were financed by funds from the
Students' Association and income generated through Film or Coffeehouse
programs.
At the time of formation, SUC had a president along with the following
committees: films, concerts, coffeehouse, performing arts, recreation
and travel, publicity, lectures and arts and exhibits.
Several of the committees have changed over the years, as well as the
name of the organization. During the 1985-86 school year the
organization's name was changed from Student Union Council to University
Program Council. Sometime between 1987 and 1989 the coffeehouse
committee changed its name to Showcase. Sometime between 1986 and 1989
the Special Events position was created to take over the
responsibilities of the film position. In the spring of 1995 the
Community Service position was formed. Hobo Day, formerly an individual
organization, became a UPC committee, and the Arts position was created
from a combination of the Performing Arts position and the Arts and
Exhibits committees. In 1999 the Social Awareness position was created,
and in 2000 the Vice-President position was added.
The present-day
UPC has grown to consist of a president, a vice president, and the
following committees: Hobo Day, Community Service, Showcase, Publicity
and Graphics, Lectures and Forums, Concerts, Special Events, Arts,
Social Awareness and Recreation and Travel. UPC also has its own advisor
and is financed by funds from the Students' Association and income
generated through ticket sales, co-sponsorships, donations and breezeway
sales. UPC is a strong student-run organization that will continue to
grow in both knowledge and respect in the upcoming years.
