Wild Hare Racing®
Club is a part of South Dakota State University®
(SDSU®).
The club is a student organization that designs,
fabricates, tests, markets, and races a
new mini formula
style racecar every year
from the ground up. The Team is comprised of all students, mostly Engineering majors,
who are 100% hands on in every aspect of building
the car.
Wild Hare
Racing®
has been a sanctioned SDSU®
club since 2008 and has competed at the national
level since 2001. Wild Hare Racing challenges SDSU®
Engineering students to design, build and race a formula
car. The Formula-SAE®
Competition, sponsored by the Society for Automotive
Engineers (SAE®),
brings together all of the disciplines of engineering in
a hands-on, student-managed team. The competition helps
to better prepare students for the workforce by
providing experience solving real-life engineering
problems while working together as a team. |

The Competition

The concept behind Formula SAE®
is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a
design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The
prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a
production item. The target marketing group for the race
car is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Each
student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a
series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event
operations and promote clever problem solving.
The Formula-SAE®
competition is an annual event that marks the
culmination of a year's worth of hard work from
university students from around the world. Each car is
put through its paces in individual tests including both
static and dynamic events. Teams are judged based on
static events including a Cost and Manufacturing
Analysis, Sales Presentation, and Design Review. The
dynamic events include Acceleration, Skid Pad,
Autocross, Endurance, and Fuel Economy.

completely new car every year is not easy or cheap we
must reach out to the community, our families, and
corporate sponsors alike to help us generate the funds
and/or materials necessary to accomplish our goal. We
welcome any help you can give us including material,
discounts, or any other form of donations. If you would
